Dancehall also know as Bashment started in the 1970's in Jamaica, the dancehall culture is a combination of social injustice , repatriation, lyrics about dancing , violence and explicit sexuality. This culture is where you can also experience live music, clashes, rivals, head to head sound systems and live audience.
Dancehall is predominately made for the youths and lower class citizens, this helped many youths distinct there identity in local, national and global context. thought dancehall the youth attempted to deal with endemic problem of property, racism, and violence.
The culture of dancehall has also transform into a fashion trend , women or the "divas of dancehall" would wear reveling pieces of cloth that can hardly be called garments, spandex outfits that extenuate more than cover one nakedness its is said that the influence of slack lyrics within dancehall started this trend. Another trend in this culture is the exceeding important of flashy vehicles and size of each gang.
the new phenomenon is expensive casual wear, including dancehall thought out Italy, Germany, japan and other west Indian islands. Dancehall has spawned to make parties and stage performances more energetic and i am extremely happy to see the growth, but their are concerns about how the youth perceive the culture of dancehall. Parents should be cautioned about this culture.
MY View
I am a person that is very involved with dancehall I love going to stage show and seeing my favorite artist preform although they have slack lyrics I never take what they say latterly. There are also dance moves that I have seen when women are flung to the floor and a man would jump on top and start thrusting themselves as if there were in a bed room, that's just taking it to far! in my opinion I would never let a man disrespect my body like that but these ladies who are allowing the men to do so simply see it as entertainment. Now many of the dances and song in dancehall are actually being band from show and other public events. This action which the government has take is a step in the right direction because i think people are using site of what dancehall is/ was. At the end of the day it is about haveing fun and enjoying yourself the best way you know how!
